WHAT are antioxidants?

The group of substances called antioxidants generally prevent the formation and harmful effects of so-called free radicals.

 

Several nutrients act as antioxidants, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and manganese.

 

Many other substances in the food, so-called bioactive substances, can act as antioxidants. Examples of bioactive substances are flavonoids and anthocyanins. Larger amounts of bioactive substances are found in berries, onions, various cabbages, green tea, red wine, grapes, oranges, nuts and seeds.

ARE ANTIOXIDANTS GOOD FOR YOU?

It is still unclear whether the health effects associated with these foods can be explained by their ability to neutralize free radicals and other antioxidant properties.
